Para-rescuers go underground for training in Butte, Montana

Snaking their way down the Lexington mine shaft, students of a Butte business that trains para-rescuers learned Wednesday how difficult it can be to save someone trapped hundreds of feet below ground.

“One thing they take away from here is how dangerous the environment is and they have to understand the risk,” said David Lawrence, an active-duty Air Force officer attached to a special operations unit.

The unit, with about 18 people, is in Butte for nearly 21/2 weeks, taking advantage of a unique terrain that offers them real-life ways to train in extreme conditions.
