Times are changing in Pony, Montana

Ranch sale to developer fuels speculation of large-scale development

Residents around this quiet historic mining town have long known its stunning setting was an undiscovered gem.

The town is nestled at the eastern flank of the Tobacco Root Mountains, with wide open views of pastures and irrigated hayfields to the east. Just west of town, the aptly named Hollowtop Mountain towers above, providing a beautiful backdrop.

Yet for decades, little has changed in Pony. There’s still one bar in town, many of the brick buildings around town are abandoned and a good portion of the residents here leave in winter to escape the cold.

But all of that could change dramatically over the next decade if a large ranch just outside of town is subdivided and developed.

One of the developers of the millionaires-only Yellowstone Club in Big Sky is part of a group of investors who recently bought the 8,000-acre Hollowtop Ranch.
