UM officials hope to attract more in-state graduates with scholarship program. Vermont proposes 12,000 scholarships to keep students in state.

Each year, Montana high schools graduate about 10,200 students.

Each year, about 5,000 of those newly minted graduates go on to college, and 750 of them attend college out of state.

No one is sure what happens to the other 5,000-some members of the graduating class, or where they go, said Jed Liston, vice president for enrollment services at the University of Montana.

One thing for certain, though. They’re not enrolling in Montana’s university system.

Scholarships designed to keep young in Vt.

To keep young people from leaving the state, the governor has proposed giving out more than 12,000 scholarships to Vermont colleges to students who agree to stay in the state for at least three years after they graduate.

The 15-year, $175 million Vermont Promise Scholarship program would be paid by an increase in funds from the settlement with the tobacco industry.
