Alternative Energy Classes Offered by the University of Montana College of Technology. Spring 2006 – The Time For Change is Now.

Fossil fuels are dwindling and greenhouse gas emissions continue to build. Can
the current energy situation last? Come and learn about the political, technical,
economical and environmental issues that surround the field of Alternative Energy.

Discover innovative methods that use the latest technology to create, capture, and
employ Alternative Energy sources.

Issues in Sustainability (AASC 195T or EVST 195 – 2 credits)

Examine a variety of themes surrounding the balance of business development with the principles of sustainability.
This course will offer an introduction to sustainability concepts that can be profitable employed by business and
individuals. Natural capitalism and triple bottom line maximization will be explored, along with the role of
corporations and small businesses in sustainable development.

Society in a New Energy Age (SCN 195T or EVST 195 – 3 credits)

Explore within a social, cultural, and political context the concerns of energy supply, security, economic
development, and environmental protection as they relate to conventional energy systems, alternative technologies
and opportunities to transition to a new energy economy. This course will give students an understanding of the
far-reaching economic, social, and environmental effects of today’s fossil-fuel energy regime and of possible future
energy regimes.

Alternative Fuels (SCN 195T or EVST 195 – 3 credits)

Investigate each of the common alternative fuels Hydrogen; Bio-diesel; Methane; Natural Gas; LPG; Ethanol;
Methanol; Electricity; and more. Fuel Characteristics; Storage and Distribution; Production; Safety and
Environmental issues ; and Economics will be discussed. The number of possibilities for fuel feedstocks is very
exciting. There are opportunities for communities to take their resources and use them to power their own homes.

Energy Systems (AASC 195T or EVST 195 – 4 credits)

Take a comprehensive and technical look at the history of energy production and consumption. Consideration will
be given to the primary sources of the earth’s energy supplies and their ability to maintain the forecasted rate of
consumption. Energy generation systems and the various energy services derived from energy usage will be
discussed in considerable detail.
