MSU-B business dean, Joe Michels, quits

Joe Michels, who has been dean of the Montana State University-Billings College of Business for 3 1/2 years, has resigned for health reasons.

Michels said Wednesday that he began a medical leave from his job Aug. 27, 2005, and has been under a doctor’s care for congestive heart failure. He was hospitalized twice, but is home now, he said.

Mary McNally, a longtime professor of management at MSU-Billings, has been named acting dean. McNally has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

MSU-Billings will look at all options for a permanent replacement, said George White, acting provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs.

MSU-Billings Chancellor Ron Sexton said he appreciates everything Michels has done as dean of the College of Business.

"His willingness to promote the broader spectrum of the university within the city of Billings and across the region has been great," Sexton said. "We thank him for his investment in MSU-Billings over the last three years."
