Rising wind farm raises hopes in Cascade County

The Cascade County skyline has a new addition these days: a giant crane stacking parts of 380-foot-tall wind turbines on Gore Hill.

The six wind turbines are taking shape at the Horseshoe Bend Wind Park near the Great Falls International Airport. And Cascade County commissioners hope the turbines west of Great Falls spark additional wind developments.

"Isn’t it a glorious windy day," said Cascade County Commission Chairwoman Peggy Beltrone shortly before visiting the site on Tuesday. "We’re very bullish on the wind here."

Horseshoe Bend is the first large-scale wind farm to be built in Cascade County. The county has been working on wind for years. The county has computerized wind maps and routinely meets with developers and private landowners to talk about wind opportunities.
