Web promises to become more pervasive in 2006

WIRELESS. Accessing the Web anytime, anywhere. Collaborating and socializing from distantlocations. Worrying about cybertheft.

The untethered communicator is going to be a big theme in 2006. Whether that untethered Joe is a consumer wanting entertainment-on-the-go from a cell phone or a software engineer in India collaborating over the high-speed, broadband Internet with peers in California, the freedom provided by powerful wireless and Web technologies will continue to rearrange business and society in 2006.

Only more so and faster, analysts and venture capitalists say. Indeed, whole industries such as long-distance telecommunications, advertising and broadcast TV are experiencing the world changing under their feet and scrambling to adjust.

"The real message here is that the Web is migrating to devices we carry in our pockets. The Web is moving beyond the desktop — it’s still on the desktop but it is moving beyond into our lives wherever we are," said Paul Saffo, technologist from the Institute for the Future think tank in Palo Alto.
