How to use business meeting to develop job opportunity

Q: You advocate trying to get job interviews indirectly, without going through a want ad or job posting, but it makes me a little uncomfortable.

The idea is that while researching a company, opportunities arise to turn a meeting into a job interview.

For example, I might have an "informational interview" with a hiring manager to learn more about the company’s business.

Or maybe I meet the manager to discuss my consulting services. But how do I take the next step? Do I go meet with the hiring manager, ostensibly to discuss business, and then change the subject to getting a job?

The idea makes sense, but this seems dishonest. I’d like to know how to do it more honestly.
