Wind may be Pocatello, Idaho’s future power source

City wants to further test sites showing promise

Devices that have been measuring wind speed since last spring indicate at least two sites would be good places to erect wind-powered generators near this southeastern city, officials say.

Greg Lanning, director of public works in Pocatello, said information from the anemometers needs to be further evaluated. He said if officials confirm the two sites still look good for wind power, two taller anemometers will be built to gather more information.

However, the city’s environment and floodway engineer, Dan Sharp, left just after the anemometers were built. Without Sharp, the city can’t perform the proper analysis of the data.

"Dan learned enough in his ventures to indicate there were some viable sites," Dave Swindell, Pocatello’s chief financial officer, told the Idaho State Journal. "I think it continues to be an interesting possibility. In the end, you want to operate your utilities as efficiently as possible."
