Advice given to Montana farmers: Think global

The word "global" should be patented as a meditation mantra.

If there is one word that describes the future of American agriculture, it is that one – repeated hundreds of times over the past three days by several speakers in Billings for a joint convention of Montana farmers and ranchers.

It would not hurt to learn Portuguese as it is spoken in Brazil, either.

On extremely short notice, Jim Bower, a commodities trader from Indiana, was asked to stand in Friday morning for a guest speaker who was iced in in Texas.

"It is global, global, global," Bower said, opening a joint general session of the Montana Stockgrowers Association and Montana Grain Growers Association Friday morning at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center.
