Help Wanted: Small-Business Owners Big Players in Politics

For many years I’ve been saying, “If you run a business, you better get involved in politics or politics will run your business.” Now comes an NFIB National Small-Business Poll, “Political Participation,” that suggests that when you do get involved, you really make a difference.

Ninety-five percent of those surveyed are registered to vote, and 84 percent usually vote. But small employers do more than vote: 3 percent said they have run for some office in the last four years.

Only 3 percent, you say? That’s about 175,000 small-business owners who have campaigned for office in the first years of the new millennium. Imagine what could happen if just 5 or 10 percent more tossed their hats in the ring.

Seventy-five percent of those polled agree that business owners must participate in politics to protect their business interests. A majority (58 percent) don’t buy the idea that one person can do very little to change the political landscape. In fact, 94 percent agree that positive change can occur if good people participate in public affairs.
