Keeping workers fully wired – MSU-Great Falls College of Technology’s Computer Information Technology works closely with business leaders to keep curriculum current

When you teach a subject that seems to change at a rapid pace, staying current is challenging.

"(Computer) technology has a shelf life of 18 months," said Clay Gehring, who works in the information technology department at the Great Falls-based Davidson Companies. "Then it’s on to a new generation of faster, better and smaller."

That’s the challenge MSU-Great Falls College of Technology’s Computer Information Technology department http://www.msugf.edu/academics/biztech/index.htm faces.

"You need to develop a program that is relevant to what people need now," said Bruce Gottwig, a business and technology faculty member at MSU Tech.

To that end, the program’s network support curriculum is freshly updated, new hands-on equipment is available and classes can be taken through a distance learning set up as well as on campus. In addition, the computer network support course work includes two new certification programs.

"The additions are cutting edge, covering new topics, including Voice over Internet Protocol and wireless for computer networks and network security," Gottwig said. "We are well aware that many businesses are still operating with older networking equipment. But if the students understand this newer technology, the older equipment is a piece of cake."

Faculty members rely on industry trends to guide updates.
