Chinese business people visit Missoula to discuss corporate connections

A dozen Chinese businessmen and women sat around a table on the third floor of the School of Business at the University of Montana on Friday afternoon.

Chafing dishes and warmers with the remains of a late lunch covered another table against one wall. The group had arrived earlier in the day after a 36-hour trip from Tianjin, an industrial city of 10 million located about 80 miles from Beijing.

Standing at the head of the table was Tom Swenson of Montana Business Capital. He was dressed in an Armani suit, and a knee-length wool coat hung over a chair back beside him. He was explaining how businesses and individuals in the United States get loans.
“Credit scoring is very important,” Swenson said, and went on to explain that if people don’t pay bills on time their credit score will suffer and they’ll have a harder time getting a loan in the future.
