Stroke of genius – Students at Colorado State University develop a cleaner two-stroke engine, then go global

The company grew out of a brainstorming session among the students, their mechanical-engineering professor and a business professor. It has been such a success that CSU is using it as a model for a collaboration between engineering and business students who will develop technology and then market it to the world.

It started with a couple of Colorado State University graduate students tinkering with a snowmobile engine.

The technology they developed, however, soon will target the filthy exhaust pouring from the tailpipes of 50 million mopeds and scooters in Asia.

The students, Tim Bauer and Nathan Lorenz, are vice presidents of the nonprofit Envirofit International Ltd., which is beginning its commercial sales with up to 3,000 engine retrofits for moped taxis in Vigan, Philippines.

They plan to hire up to 20 overseas employees within the next six months.
