Montana State University College of Engineering adds to wireless campus – UM SoBA Undergoes a Technology and Computer Upgrade

Since the beginning of fall semester, students and faculty have been enjoying wireless access throughout the three buildings in the engineering complex–Roberts Hall, Cobleigh Hall and the Engineering Physical Sciences building.

Access to wireless networks exists not only in classrooms and computer labs but also throughout most hallways. Now, students can surf, research, work on homework or team projects with classmates whenever the buildings are open, which is usually until 10 p.m.

Richard Wolff, electrical and computer engineering professor, proposed the wireless expansion after consulting with the college’s department heads, faculty members and the Information Technology Center.

SoBA Undergoes a Technology and Computer Upgrade

In order to keep pace with the ever changing face of technology, SoBA has recently undergone a significant technology and computer upgrade.

SoBA’s computer labs are now able to handle the future of 64-bit computing, with the introduction of new machines with 64-bit processors and 64-bit Windows XP operating systems. Faculty and staff are also starting to enjoy these upgrades, as our Help Desk team is in the final phase of allocating the machines. These new computers will allow faculty and staff to work more efficiently, as well as better serve them in their research needs.

Classrooms were not overlooked in this upgrade, as rooms 106, L09, L11 and L13 have all received new projectors. These projectors are designed to give out better brightness and image quality. As we continue to phase out VCRs, the classrooms are now equipped with DVD players. Because of the quality of videos, the inability to quickly maneuver to different areas on the tape, and because tapes ware out over time, all professors are encouraged to make the switch to DVDs as the technology continues to become cheaper, and easier to use.

Finally, SoBA also implemented a new Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) to its faculty and staff. The BES is integrated with SoBA’s Microsoft Exchange messaging application to provide a centralized link between wireless networks, and Blackberry devices.

With these latest upgrades, SoBA is continuing its trend of embracing cutting edge technology.
