27 US governors say more money needed to support basic science research since that nearly three-quarters of US industry patents can be directly tied to publicly funded science. The governors say that federal investment in basic research is the foundation for discover, as more than 73% of US patents cite publicly funded science as the basis for inventions. The product of federally funded research is, the governers say, a driving force behind a strong American economy.
