Academics Set Startup Record – University and nonprofit research generates 462 startup companies in 2004.

Inventions and discoveries made by U.S. researchers sparked a record 462 startups in 2004, marking a 24 percent increase over the previous year, according to a recent study.

Last year’s big jump represents the first increase in the number of startups generated by academic and hospital research in three years, said the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), which conducted the survey of 381 U.S. and Canadian universities, hospitals, and nonprofit research institutions.

“Finally, after two years, we’ve seen a turnaround in the startup situation,” Ashley Stevens, editor of the survey and the director of Boston University’s Office of Technology Transfer, said Monday. “Startups were up strongly after two consecutive years of decline.”
