Montana works to get schools teaching Indian culture

For the first time in decades, Montana’s school districts are getting the money and support they need to begin fully implementing a state constitutional mandate unique in America: that all public school students – not just American Indians – be taught about the cultural heritage of the state’s tribes.

Now comes the real challenge – making Indian Education for All happen.

The Office of Public Instruction is under pressure to get the mandate right after years of neglect.

Lawmakers are scrutinizing what’s being done with the money they allotted during the 2005 Legislature. And educators want curriculum and teacher training.
