UM students meet real world in invaluable internships

Sometimes, the college years can seem a little removed from what passes for the Real World.

And that’s where internships come in. Internships acquaint students with the day-to-day working life the future may bring.

Nicky Phear, (406) 243-6932 an instructor and program coordinator for the Wilderness and Civilization program at the University of Montana, uses internships to give students that real world experience.

“I find that internships can be a great addition to education in the classroom,” she said recently. “They really give the student some hands-on education.”

Internships can also offer a door into a lifelong profession. Or, the same internship might lead another student to realize that her chosen field really isn’t what she thought it might be.

“They can go a long way towards helping students decide if a field is the right place for them,” Phear said.
