Bitterroot Resort has potential, report says – But local opposition among plan’s obstacles

Almost a mile of vertical drop, excellent terrain and proximity to Missoula’s airport and Interstate 90 could draw thousands of avid skiers to a resort on Lolo Peak, a market analysis conducted by RRC Associates of Boulder, Colo., says.
But the proposed Bitterroot Resort would have to overcome a lack of buzz, no air service from key markets and ready opposition from locals, said the independent study paid for by Tom Maclay and the Bitterroot Resort.

Long an idea that has simmered southwest of Missoula, Maclay’s idea for the four-season resort would put its base on the 2,900-acre Maclay Ranch and extend onto national forest land on Carlton Ridge and Lolo Peak. Runs on Lolo’s lower slopes already are visible from much of Missoula.

The plan, which includes a self-contained village and golf course, was unveiled a year ago, and Maclay has since touted the economic benefits for Missoula.

Local opposition came out strong. "No Way, Maclay" bumper stickers appeared seemingly overnight across Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley.
