New University of Montana Finance Club Offers Students Networking Prospects

A new club at The University of Montana offers finance students an opportunity to network with one other and business professionals, as well as increase their knowledge of financial matters.

The UM Finance Club is the brainchild of Associated Students of UM President Brad Cederberg. He came up with the idea that UM should have a finance club after seeing the same type of group at other universities. He passed out an interest sheet to all finance majors to see if it would be something students were interested in joining.

It was a success, and since the beginning of October the club has become an official ASUM club and has held two meetings so far. The club also has joined Financial Management Association International, an organization of financial executives, analysts, professors and students from across the world.

"This club increases knowledge of finance beyond what the classroom can do," said Peter Anderson, UM Finance Club president.

The newly formed Finance Club at the University of Montana is currently looking for business professionals, in the area of finance, to be our guest and speak at one of our meetings. Speaking topics could include: finance career options, market trends, job recruitment, interviewing skills etc. We are also looking for businesses that are interested in hiring finance students for internships or full-time employment.

We are a new organization and we are very open to all suggestions and ideas from the business community that will improve our club. If you are interested in speaking or have suggestions, I urge you to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you, and I look forward to creating a relationship between the Missoula business community and the Finance Club.

Sincerely,
Peter Anderson

The club has nearly 30 members so far and is overseen by UM finance professors Bruce Costa and Keith Jakob, UM finance professor. It is mainly for finance majors, but is open to anyone with an interest in finance.

The club is looking for new members and invites anyone with interest to attend a presentation by guest speaker Cheryl Minnick at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Gallagher Business Building Room L26. Minnick is the internship coordinator for UM’s Internship Services and will conduct a discussion on resumé building.

Providing many opportunities for finance students is a main focus of the club, Anderson said. One of those opportunities is volunteer work. The members will provide tutoring for UM students enrolled in Finance 322, Corporate Finance.

We hope to help students and make it easier on them," said Nicole Erickson, UM Finance Club secretary. "That class has one of the highest failure rates of any at UM."

Anderson encourages students to join. "It will be a good opportunity for students to network with professionals and meet others in their major," he said.
