Trip Hawkins Has Gone Mobile. Electronic Arts and 3DO founder hopes to define a social mobile market with Digital Chocolate.

It might sound like Trip Hawkins, the 50-year-old CEO of the mobile game company Digital Chocolate, is on a sugar high when he predicts that U.S. cell phone subscribers will spend “over ten billion dollars” a year by 2013 on a new market he calls “mobile social applications.”

Given that the market doesn’t even exist yet, and isn’t tracked by market research companies, that might sound like hubris from most entrepreneurs. But Mr. Hawkins is no stranger to getting to a market early, or redefining an industry. In 1982, he founded Electronic Arts, which would become the largest video game publisher in the United States under his leadership, and tweaked the company’s business model while the entertainment software market was still in its infancy.
