The cost of compliance – Sexual harassment training becomes a lucrative business
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, Cynthia Sandoval had taken her traveling sexual harassment slide show to Dinuba, Lathrop and Modesto. Now it was Thursday, and she was standing in a Mill Valley conference room, talking to employees of a market research firm called MarketTools.
"E-mail is the new frontier of harassment," she declared. "At one company, someone sent his friend an e-mail about ’10 reasons why beer is better than women.’ His friend hit ‘send all’ by mistake. It cost that company a whole lot of money to deal with that problem."
Sandoval, an employment lawyer with the firm of Jackson Lewis, has spent much of this autumn traveling the state and speaking to supervisory employees about sexual harassment in the workplace.
