Broadband could be an outlet away in Idaho – IdaComm tests high-speed access over power lines

Paul Navarro, the property manager for the Alaska Center, was having difficulty installing Internet connections in the historic 1920s building near 10th and Main Downtown without damaging the building or paying too much money.

That’s when he discovered broadband over power lines, or BPL, a new technology that can make high-speed Internet available through the electrical outlets to a home or office building by way of the electric power lines already in place.

Boise-based IdaComm Inc., the telecommunications subsidiary of IdaCorp Inc., has been testing BPL technology in Boise and asked Navarro and his tenants to participate. Navarro "happily" signed up, he said.

"It really reduces my construction costs," he said. And after trying it out, Navarro now prefers BPL for his tenants over other broadband options, like a digital subscriber line (DSL) or cable modem connection, because it is "one of the fastest Internets I have ever seen," he said.
