Colleges understand their role in reviving Michigan’s economy

Mary Sue Coleman is torn.

"If I were a worker and made a great salary with good benefits, I’d be very distressed right now," says the president of the University of Michigan. "We can’t take the attitude of blaming people this is happening to."

She understands the painful uncertainty: Thousands of manufacturing jobs are disappearing, and so is a way of life in Michigan. Delphi Corp. wants to eviscerate the wages and benefits of the union workers. General Motors Corp. is pushing its union for $1 billion in health care concessions. Manufacturers are fleeing overseas.

"I’m not one of those people who thinks the manufacturing economy is dead," she told me Friday, an optimist amid deepening pessimism. "It’s going to be more high-tech. It’s not going away. It’s going to be different."
