New brain chip may aid paralyzed

A Massachusetts-based company on Tuesday launched a new engineering and manufacturing facility at the University of Utah’s Research Park that will focus on the development of small chips for movement-impaired people.

Cyberkinetics said its new center will develop and manufacture the chips, which are surgically implanted on the brains of people who are suffering from severe paralysis.

The complex spans 10,000 square feet and supports 23 engineers, researchers and manufacturing personnel.

The technology was developed at the U. but in the 1990s was spun off into a company called Bionics. In 2002, Cyberkinetics acquired Bionics, moving initial animal experimentation of the technology to humans.
