Technology saves time, gas for truckers – PrePass lets rigs get weighed without stopping

Schneider National Inc. has embraced technology that can check the credentials and weight of trucks on the move and let them zip past weigh stations and toll booths.

The Green Bay transportation company has outfitted 14,500 trucks with cigarette pack-sized transponders that signal special scales to weigh the rigs as they roll down the highway, and also pay tolls electronically.

Called PrePass, the system can give trucks as much as 60 to 90 minutes a day of additional driving time – a significant savings, said Wayne Lubner, Schneider’s vice president of driver and contractor relations.

That increases productivity for the company and puts more money in drivers’ pockets. Drivers at over-the-road companies such as Schneider are paid by the mile.
