Bozeman to receive $37.5 million in defense bill

A defense spending bill that has passed the Senate has $37.5 million in projects for the Bozeman area, Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., announced Friday.

More than $95 million is secured for Montana projects in the Defense Appropriations Bill, Burns said in a prepared statement. The senator is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Defense Subcommittee.

Most of the money is for research and development, Burns said. It will be used to provide cutting-edge technology for the military.

Defense Appropriations Pass Senate

Burns Secures Over $95 Million for Montana

U.S. Senator Conrad Burns (R-Mont) announced today the Senate successfully passed the Defense Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year (FY) 2006. Burns, a senior member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee and member of the Defense Subcommittee, played in integral role in securing $95,200,000 in funding for Montana projects.

“A lot of this is research and development,” said Burns. “It’s a way to continually make our armed forces better and stronger, with cutting-edge technology available for them. Montana has a great supply of brilliant researchers, and the infrastructure to do the work. We’re doing some amazing work here in the state, and a lot of folks don’t realize it because there aren’t smokestacks and huge factories. They’re the businesses you drive by every day and don’t give a second thought to, but they’re forming the future of our armed forces and new high-tech jobs for Montanans, and I am glad to have helped secure this important funding.”

In addition to the Montana-specific projects, $27,009,000 was included for the Procurement Technical Assistance Program, which provides critical assistance to small businesses seeking to participate in Department of Defense and other federal agency procurement contracts. PTAP clients are small businesses — including small disadvantaged, minority-owned, women-owned, and veteran-owned businesses – that cannot afford the full-time marketing and procurement staff so common among large government contractors.

Other highlights of the $440.2 billion FY06 Department of Defense (DoD) Appropriations bill includes a 3.1% across-the-board pay raise for military personnel and increases basic allowance for housing to maintain last year’s DoD initiative to eliminate out-of-pocket housing costs for the military. The bill also fully funds vitally important pay, benefits and medical programs for our troops.

This spending bill will now go to a joint House-Senate conference committee, where a few, chosen members – including Conrad Burns – will work to reconcile differences between the House and Senate versions. The conference report will then go back to the respective houses for final passage, and on to the President for his signature.
