Montana-made water system from Drake Engineering Inc. of may be answer for coalbed methane industry

In August, Drake Engineering Inc. was in contract talks with Marathon Oil Corp., a worldwide oil and gas giant, according to project manager Vivian Drake. Marathon is interested in the Drake Process developed by Vivian Drake and her husband, Ron, in Helena for use in the Powder River coalbed methane fields.

Their system is designed to treat water produced in coalbed methane development to meet water quality requirements of regulatory agencies before it is used or discharged. Patents are pending.

"We have been working on the new process for about five years," Vivian Drake said. "It took off about two years ago when we contacted oil companies, and Marathon Oil had the most interest."

Their first full-scale unit was installed at a Marathon Oil site outside Sheridan, Wyo., in August. The demonstration could be done in October.
