Montana Universities’ patents helping Montana businesses

Montana’s universities haven’t yet produced a blockbuster invention like Gatorade, but they’re trying.

Discoveries patented by Montana State University http://www.montana.edu/wwwvr/index.html have been licensed to a variety of Montana companies that are developing better drugs, looking for new ways to fight cancer, and improving the "poo powder" that Belgrade firm Phillips Environmental uses in its portable potties, the state Board of Regents learned Thursday.

Tom McCoy, MSU vice president for research, told the regents that MSU has issued 102 patents, and has another 124 patents pending based on discoveries and inventions made at the Bozeman campus. That’s three times as many patents as MSU reported for 2002.
