Montana hoping promotion with outdoor retailer, The North Face will boost winter tourism

Hoping to draw more well-heeled out-of-staters to the Treasure State’s ski slopes and other winter recreation opportunities, Travel Montana has crafted a promotion involving a top outdoor clothing manufacturer and one of the world’s best-known mountaineers.

Teaming up with gear and clothing maker The North Face and one of its most visible sponsored athletes, Bozeman-based Conrad Anker, the tourism wing of the Department of Commerce is offering a week-long trip for two to Montana this winter, with a day climbing or skiing (depending upon the winners’ abilities) with Anker thrown in as an extra perk.

The promotion, several years in the making and lined up by Mercury Advertising of Bozeman, Travel Montana’s winter advertising agency, has limited risk and the potential for a large reward for the state.

The contest will be promoted with flyers in nine of The North Face’s retail stores in some of the country’s biggest cities, according to Travel Montana director Betsy Baumgart. The contest will also be emailed to the existing visitor/customer databases of both Travel Montana and The North Face. Big Sky Resort donated the trip.
