State job training effort due for major overhaul in Montana

The governor’s new Workforce Investment Board has voted to overhaul how workplace training is operated in the state, eliminating a partnership with a nonprofit group that some have complained only created more bureaucracy.

Tuesday’s board vote came despite accusations from some that board members were rushing to judgment and grabbing control of workforce training from local officials.

‘‘I can assure you that the system is not broke and doesn’t need fixing,” said Bob Henry, a retired Butte banker who serves on one of the boards administered by the current partnership. ‘‘Please do not rush into action today based on the testimony you have heard today.”

Supporters, however, said the change will cut bureaucracy and free up an additional $1 million for job training.
