UC Berkeley opens Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology to encourage high-tech leaders.

The University of California, Berkeley, said on Tuesday it is opening the Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology (CET) at its College of Engineering to educate future technology leaders and encourage innovation.

The university is drawing upon investment firms and executives in the Bay Area to help educate undergraduate computer engineers and scientists at CET.

A group of executives and firms have lined up to join as advisors, sponsors, and instructors to support CET students, faculty, and staff. CET plans to create startup ventures; transfer technology to corporate partners; and commercialize products based on university research.

CET represents another step in the growing and sometime controversial partnership between universities and businesses in developing and commercializing products. Universities are increasingly demanding their fair share of the proceeds from such products.
