Gaining Nonprofit Status For a Charitable Business

Question: I used to sell personalized children’s books, and I am interested in re-starting this business. I plan to go to nursing homes and schools and set up shop on location, letting the institutions do the advertising, and donate a substantial portion of the profits to the institutions. I volunteer at two local nursing homes. How do I go about this with a nonprofit status?
