Venture Capital: Seattle is a hot spot for wireless gaming

Reaxion Corp. started developing games for cell phones four years ago at a time when the mobile entertainment industry was in its infancy. It was a smart bet for the Seattle maker of Minigolf, Pro Curling, Fight Hard 3D and about 15 other mobile games.

The privately held company, which today plans to announce $2 million in a first round of funding from i-Hatch Ventures, survived the lean years and is now one of more than a half-dozen Seattle-area companies looking to cash in on what has become a mobile gaming bonanza.

"Wireless gaming is exiting puberty," said M:Metrics senior analyst Seamus McAteer, whose Seattle company tracks the usage of games, music, ringtones and other content on mobile phones. "It is becoming a market for grown-ups."

That could be good news for Seattle-area companies, which are hoping to attract some of the estimated 200 million people who will play Tetris, bowling, darts or some other game on their cell phones this year. With Nintendo, Microsoft, T-Mobile and Cingular maintaining operations here, Seattle has quickly developed into one of the nation’s hot spots for wireless gaming.

Here are a few examples of what is going on:
