To meet the growing demand for skilled technicians, the National Science Foundation recently released a RFP for the Advanced Technical Education (ATE) program.

ATE grants aid community colleges in developing strong associate-level science and engineering programs. The deadline for proposals is October 13, 2005.

ADULT LEARNERS & ROLE OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Lumina Foundation’s latest Focus magazine profiled several adults who returned to or began college after the age of 30. During its interviews, Lumina discovered that many adults are returning to the classroom for career advancement or because of employer financial support.

Community colleges act as a critical workforce intermediary, educating nearly 65 percent of America’s allied health workers and 80 percent of the country’s firefighters. Community colleges are more accessible for working adults, and often have a close relationship with sponsoring employers.
