Washington State biodiesel venture tests challenging waters – Seattle Biodiesel

In the tortoise-like race to start a biodiesel industry in Washington, Seattle Biodiesel http://www.seattlebiodiesel.com/ is leading the field.

The 11-person company on the west side of Washington was established by John Plaza in 2003. It recently built a refinery and can now manufacture its own fuel, making it the first company in the Pacific Northwest to operate a commercial-scale (more than 5 million gallons a year) biodiesel refinery.

A portion of the fuel this year will come from oilseed crops grown and crushed in Eastern Washington. As part of his company’s research and development process, Plaza, president of the Seattle Biodiesel, located two small-capacity crushers in Eastern Washington this year.
