FireBreak AntiWorm(TM) from Intrinsic Security (Missoula) slows propagation of Zotob worm

Intrinsic Security http://www.intrinsicsecurity.com/ announced today that FireBreak AntiWorm(TM) actively suppresses Zotob worm traffic and slows the propagation of all new Zotob worm variants as they appear. The Zero Day Worm Defense system detects the worms from the earliest moments of an outbreak and immediately suppresses worm traffic. FireBreak detects and impedes each new variant observed on customer and test networks without definition updates.

The Zotob worm family includes many variants unleashed after the announcement of the MS05-039 buffer overflow in Microsoft(R) Windows operating systems. Variants of the Esbot, Spybot, Bobax and Zotob worms struck many networks this week, creating hundreds of thousands of zombie PC systems worldwide. Most worm variants observed thus far use IRC to receive instructions from remote attackers. These are among the most serious network intrusions.

FireBreak AntiWorm instantly detected and slowed the propagation of each new worm variant when it appeared. FireBreak also immediately alerts staff to worm outbreaks while suppressing the worm. Intrusion Suppression provides more response time at the critical early moments of a worm outbreak when containment is most valuable.

"FireBreak AntiWorm is designed from the ground up to combat worms," says company founder Gary W. Longsine. "AntiVirus vendors require time to detect, capture, analyze, and distribute signature files. FireBreak AntiWorm is already protecting your network from the latest worm while the major AntiVirus vendors are still picking a name for it."

FireBreak AntiWorm is a centrally managed appliance based system that complements existing antivirus, firewall, and IDS/IPS systems from any vendor. The system is deployed without complex integration and is automatically configured on most networks. The system is compatible with Windows, UNIX, Linux, and all common network configurations including DHCP managed network addresses, and ethernet or wireless LAN.

"Zotob allowed only a few days for patching, and that’s just not enough time to test and deploy a patch on most large networks of any complexity," says Jonathan Ham, CISSP and independent security consultant. "FireBreak AntiWorm bridges The Patch Gap, immediately detecting outbreaks and dramatically slowing the spread of worms that hit a network."
