Getting an offer: the right stuff to succeed in job interview

I was talking recently with another longtime Silicon Valley manager about people we once decided not to hire who went on to have very successful careers.

I decided not to pursue hiring a foreign correspondent who later became an executive editor of a major U.S. newspaper. The other person in the discussion didn’t offer a marketing communications job to a person who later became a CEO.

Our hiring decisions were not necessarily wrong, given the time and place in which they occurred. For a variety of reasons, these two candidates were just not the best of the possible selections we could make at that time.

However, this conversation reminded me of how many factors can go into whether you get a job offer.
