Will every downtown go wireless?

Municipal hubs in Waltham and Walpole, Hopkinton and Hopedale would become wireless Internet hotspots serving on-the-go workers under a plan to make Massachusetts more business friendly unveiled by House leaders last week.

The proposal calls for creating a state broadband affairs officer — or "czar" — who would ensure all of Massachusetts’ 351 cities and towns are equipped with high-speed Internet service and their downtowns provide wireless access to laptop users.

"The workforce is much more mobile today and obviously doing transactions on the fly is becoming more and more prevalent," said state Rep. Stephen LeDuc, D-Marlborough. Creating "wireless downtowns," he said, would make the state "that much more convenient for the mobile work force."
