Council considers Montana film industry

Throwing a California party and inviting movie executives to meet Gov. Schweitzer could be a step toward revitalizing Montana’s film industry, says a new state council consisting of people with entertainment connections.

The Montana Film and Television Advisory Council, established by Schweitzer in June, recently met for the first time and talked about ways to achieve its goal of making Montana a more frequent choice for the filming of movies, television shows and commercials.

Too often, Montana loses out to Canada, the council said. Incentives for filming there include tax breaks.
All 26 people Schweitzer appointed to the council work in television and film, giving them contacts lacked by the state’s film promotion office. Council members include film producer Patrick Markey, actor Peter Fonda and actress Margot Kidder, all with homes in Montana.
