Billings OKs rendering plant plan

A California company plans to invest $1 million into a Billings plant that will recycle 35 to 40 tons of used cooking oil each week.

The City Council on Monday approved a special review with eight conditions that will allow Baker Commodities Inc. to build the plant to convert the used grease, collected from Billings area restaurants, into other products, mainly livestock feed.

Dick Hinthorne, general manager for Baker Commodities, said the recycling plant would create up to 10 new jobs in Billings, while providing an essential service for livestock producers, restaurants, grocery stores and butcher shops.
