Flight plans into Seattle face uncertain future

A game of airborne chess has erupted in Seattle, and it could affect western Montana travelers down the road.

When Southwest Airlines, which does not serve Missoula, proposed moving its operations out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to the King County-owned Boeing Field this week, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air – which do serve Missoula – demanded that they too be allowed to operate flights in and out of Boeing.

"If a direct competitor moves their operations to Boeing Field, we’re left with no choice but to request equal access," said Bill Ayer, chairman and CEO of Alaska Air Group, the holding company of Alaska and Horizon.

However, that could affect travelers who fly Horizon to Sea-Tac with the intention of connecting to other flights.
