Informed Bioscience (Bozeman) Launches GenePARTTM Beta Software

Today, Informed Bioscience http://www.informedbioscience.com , a Bozeman, Mont., based bioinformatics company announced the release of its Beta version of its software GenePARTTM.

GenePARTTM is a powerful tool that assists researchers in analyzing genomic data. The software makes it possible for researchers to simultaneously identify an interesting set of genes and an optimal partitioning of array samples. For example, in a sample Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma data set, without any prior knowledge about clinical outcomes of the patient samples, GenePART™ was able to almost perfectly discriminate short-term (cancer) survivors from long-term (cancer) survivors and normal controls. A competing approach based on hierarchical clustering was unable to separate the two tissue classes.

According to Brendan Mumey, Montana State University Associate Professor of Computer Science and Company Founder, “The chief advantage of GenePARTTM is that it solves the problem of finding interesting partitions of data (e.g. discovering subclasses [long-term versus short-term] of cancer patients) and simultaneously finds a set of genes that can discriminate these partitions. While some academic software has been developed for this purpose, GenePARTTM is the only program that solves both problems simultaneously and finds a proven, optimal solution.”

During a 60 day trial period, academic and industry leaders in microarray research will evaluate the software, providing Informed Bioscience with feedback at the end of the trial period.

Informed Bioscience has been in existence for nearly half a year and is being incubated in TechRanch’s Grow-Your-Own program. The GYO program enables researchers to work with TechRanch in the journey of commercializing their research without having to interrupt their work to create and build a company. Additionally, Informed Bioscience has been working closely with Montana State University’s Technology Transfer Office and the National Institute of Health. Informed Bioscience is also a member of the Montana Bioscience Alliance.

About MSU Tech Transfer Office:

Montana State University expended over 90 million dollars on research grants in FY 2004. Products of this research may translate into, for example, new medical devices, diagnostics for human and veterinary use, pharmaceuticals, new grain varieties, and innovations in current products. In order for these products and processes to move from a university laboratory to the consumer, a number of steps must be successfully accomplished including IP protection and movement to the private sector. The role of MSU’s Technology Transfer Office is to provide a dynamic interface between the university and the private sector. Online at http://www.montana.edu/wwwvr/tto/about-tto.html.

About Montana Bioscience Alliance:

The Montana Bioscience Alliance serves as a hub for Montana’s biotechnology companies, entrepreneurs, laboratories, hospitals, clinics and universities to commercialize, grow and sustain globally competitive bioscience companies — ultimately to create high-quality jobs and economic opportunity in Montana. About the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. Helping to lead the way toward important medical discoveries that improve people’s health and save lives, NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and even cures for common and rare diseases.
