Merger approved, Corixa cutting 70 jobs in Seattle – No cuts in Hamilton, MT

With its GlaxoSmithKline merger approved by its shareholders, Seattle-based Corixa Corp. is losing its chief executive and co-founder, who is leaving the biotechnology company he started more than 10 years ago.

Sources familiar with the exit of Steven Gillis, who also co-founded Immunex Corp., said they learned the news last week, when GlaxoSmithKline told Corixa employees in Seattle that 70 of them would be out of jobs.

Those cuts amount to about 65 percent of Corixa’s Seattle staff. The state Department of Employment Security received a layoff notice from Corixa last week, and GlaxoSmithKline confirmed the number yesterday.
