Idaho’s big Lewis & Clark anniversary is about to begin – Crowds aren’t as big as anticipated in other states

The three-year Lewis and Clark Bicentennial is half over, but Idaho’s big year for Lewis and Clark events is just about to begin.

"You have to think that this will be the big time for Idaho," Idaho Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Coordinator Keith Petersen said. "… I think the Boise event will be one of the best attended in the country."

If so, it would be an exception. Hopes are high for Boise’s Lewis and Clark Commemoration, scheduled for next May 20-29, but attendance at events in other states has been less than expected. Ticket sales were slow for Montana’s 34-day commemoration, which began June 1. The hordes of Lewis and Clark tourists once predicted simply haven’t materialized.

Even at Idaho’s Lolo Pass, where the Corps of Discovery survived its worst ordeal, a proposed lottery for passes to travel the Trail hasn’t been necessary.
