There’s no business like ranch business, dude – Averill’s Flathead Lake Lodge

Averill’s Flathead Lake Lodge http://www.averills.com/ is 2,200 acres of natural paradise.

Now in its 60th year, the Bigfork dude ranch started by a World War II bomber pilot and owned today by one of his sons intends to stay just the way it is for the next 60 years.

We made it through the telephone era without phones, and we ve made it through the television era without TV, said Doug Averill, the facility’s owner.

We want to keep this a family oriented, Western-style vacation ranch. We want it to be a place where people can come to enjoy the simple side of life and bring their kids along with them.

But don t confuse simple with cheap.

During the ranch’s summer season, $10,000 will buy a family of four a week in a log cottage; daily access to activities such as horseback riding, fishing, sailing, swimming, hiking, biking and tennis; cowboy cuisine created from recipes coveted by gourmet magazines; and assorted barn dances, boat cruises, steer-roping demonstrations and bonfire sing-a-longs.

Double the aforementioned activities and you ll have about the right number of children’s programs on the agenda.

Averill said his business has across the years shown annual increases in revenue of between 6 percent and 8 percent, though he declined to comment more specifically about the profitability of the enterprise.
