Swan Valley, Montana residents create workshop for rural newcomers

As newcomers continue to flock to rural Montana, communities are taking it upon themselves to educate immigrants about life in the Western woods.

The latest example comes from the Swan Valley, where locals have convened a how-to workshop, hoping to teach recent rural recruits how to live in a way that protects the amenities that drew them here in the first place.

The homeowners workshop, titled "So You Want to Live in the Swan," is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, and features loggers, foresters, a geologist, landscapers and others. The focus, organizers say, is on how to manage residential property in a way that minimizes changes to surrounding habitat and mitigates wildfire danger.

The Swan Valley workshop is only the latest in what are becoming increasingly popular attempts to inform newcomers about their place in their new place.
