2 more wind farms planned in North Dakota

Two new wind farms are now being planned in northern Burleigh County, with the first crop of 33 turbines scheduled for construction this fall.

FPL Energy, a Juno Beach, Fla., company and a leading wind-power developer, said Monday it wants to have the turbines operating by year’s end. They will generate 49.5 megawatts, enough electricity to serve about 15,000 houses, company spokesman Steve Stengel said.

Basin Electric Power Cooperative of Bismarck has agreed to buy the electricity, said Ron Harper, Basin’s chief executive officer. Basin already buys power from two other FPL Energy wind farms, in southeastern North Dakota and central South Dakota.
