Seattle is ranked 10th in U.S. in life sciences study

Lack of significant manufacturing base cited

Despite being home to some of the top life sciences researchers in the nation, Seattle ranks 10th out of the nation’s 11 top metropolitan areas in terms of current overall strength and potential growth, according to a national study released yesterday.

The Milken Institute http://www.milkeninstitute.org/ of Santa Monica, Calif., said that although the Puget Sound region excels in biotechnology research and in attracting money, the area lacks an important piece of the life sciences industry — pharmaceutical and manufacturing companies that employ large numbers of people.

Institute researchers said that other U.S. regions, because they are more diverse, have better capitalized on the entire life sciences industry, which includes university research, venture capital funding, spinoff companies, product development and manufacturing.
